It was actually a complete accident that we ended up doing Greg and Kim’s engagement photos at Donut Falls. Our original plan was to do photos at Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon next to Solitude Mountain Resort. After cold weather forcasts caused us to cancer our first session, we rescheduled for a few days later and met at Silver Lake early in the morning.
I was so excited to do photos at Silver Lake. I’ve tried to do family photos there before, but we got completely snowed out that time and wouldn’t have been able to make it even a mile up the canyon.
This time I was certain things were going to work out, and we were going to have a beautiful, wintery engagement shoot on the dock of Silver Lake.
No such luck.
We got there early in the morning to catch the best light and found that the lake wasn’t even visible because it was completely frozen and covered in three feet of snow…as was everything else. I’m not sure what I expected from a lake next to a ski resort in May, but this certainly wasn’t it.
With that location pretty much ruled out, we had to think quick. It just so happened that a favorite Big Cottonwood Canyon location of both theirs and mine, Donut Falls, was just down the road a little ways. So we hopped in our cars and headed to Donut Falls (an lower elevation) for some magical forest engagement photos.
While there was still quite a bit of snow on the ground in places, we were able to avoid most of it and get the perfect mountain engagement photos Kim and Greg were looking for.
I can’t wait to do their formals and wedding photos as well!
