Hi! My name is Laren Helms, and I am the photographer behind Pushpin Pictures.

I grew up on a ranch in southern Colorado in a town named Manassa, got a degree in PR from Brigham Young University, married the love of my life, and now live in Spanish Fork, Utah, with our two kids and one dog where I am now pursuing an MBA and a MS in marketing through Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business.

I first stumbled into photography when I was in high school. For Christmas my junior year, I received a Sony Cybershot digital camera. I hadn’t asked for a camera, and I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted one, but I decided to try it out anyway. A few months later, my family and I went to Hawaii, and that’s where I fell in love with photography.

These are a few of the pictures I took there:

The idea for Pushpin Pictures came in 2011. By that point, my camera was falling apart. In fact, the shutter button actually fell out leaving nothing but a 1.5mm hole and no way for me to actually take a picture.

Rather than get it repaired or buy a new camera, I did what any prudent person would do and figured out a way to not spend money. I discovered that if I took a pushpin and cut off the tip, it fit perfectly in the hole and actually worked to trigger the shutter. And so I kept taking photos…with a pushpin.

(When in a pinch, I also used a paperclip, a stiff blade of grass, my wife’s pearl earring, and a whittled matchstick.)

A short time later, I decided that I wanted to pursue photography seriously and upgraded my camera equipment (thank goodness!). And not long after that, I upgraded my camera equipment again as I started doing more professional shoots.

Even though I am a full-time marketing professional and a part-time student, I absolutely love photography and want to make sure it’s a part of my life no matter how busy I get.
